Here at Mr Pickles’ Yorkshire Food Emporium we love a good sandwich. They’re quick and easy to make, which is essential when we’re busy in the shop, but, more importantly, they’re super tasty thanks to the variety of ingredients we have to hand – including our great range of The Depot Bakery bread.
The sandwich is commonly thought to have been invented by Lord John Montague, the 4th Earl of Sandwich. As a dedicated gambler, he liked to eat at the casino table and would ask for meat to be served in between two slices of bread. Others began to follow suit, asking for ‘the same as Sandwich’ and his name became synonymous with the snack.
Although originally made with two slices of bread, sandwiches now come in many shapes and sizes. From a toasted panini to a tasty wrap, they all count and we consume as many as 11.5 billion every year. In fact The Wall Street Journal has described the sandwich as Britain’s “biggest contribution to gastronomy”.
Which is why we take sandwich game so seriously as Mr Pickles’! With an infinite number of food combinations available, we believe that every sandwich is an opportunity for a new taste sensation. Here are a few of the team’s favourites.
